"body": "Alex Carpenter works across AI implementation, education and research. Based in Mount Barker, South Australia, he leads Unlocking Technology, teaches at Adelaide University, and is undertaking doctoral research into how SME leaders respond to AI.\n\nHis AI work includes founding Refuge AI in December 2022 and co-founding Human Compatible in June 2023. Since June 2024, he has led Unlocking Technology, combining technical implementation with helping organisations develop the capability to use and improve their systems.\n\nHis earlier experience spans entrepreneurship education, course design and university venture development. He also completed a technical analyst engagement with the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing in 2025.\n\nHis interests connect practical business adoption with broader questions about education, work, ownership and human dignity. This site brings together his longer-form writing and selected public contributions, with dates and links so readers can see both the argument and its context.\n\n## A personal perspective\nI’m a devout Catholic, a husband and a father of three young children. My faith is at the core of my identity, and I pay close attention to the Vatican’s teaching on AI. That perspective shapes the questions I ask about technology and the future.\n\n## Practice\nAt Unlocking Technology, Alex combines technical implementation with helping people develop the capability to use and improve their systems. The practice is developing an approach to building software with teams and transferring operating knowledge and ownership to them.\n\n[Unlocking Technology](https://www.unlockingtechnology.com/)\n\n## Teaching and course development\nAlex teaches AI for Business Transformation and Entrepreneurial Business Development at Adelaide University. His course-development work includes AI for Business, AI for Business Transformation, Design Thinking, and Design Thinking – Problems to Practice.\n\nThe university’s 2026 listings name Alex as an instructor for AI for Business Transformation in both semesters and for Entrepreneurial Business Development alongside another instructor in semester 1. The course-development account comes from Alex’s supplied professional profile and his confirmation.\n\n[AI for Business Transformation course listing](https://adelaide.edu.au/study/courses/2026/busi-3005/) · [Entrepreneurial Business Development course listing](https://adelaide.edu.au/study/courses/2026/busi-5031/)\n\n## Research\nAlex is undertaking doctoral research into how managerial cognition shapes SMEs’ strategic responses to the accelerating development of AI. This is ongoing research.\n\n[University research record](https://researchers.adelaide.edu.au/profile/manjula.dissanayake)\n\n## Selected experience\n- June 2024–present: Principal Consultant / AI Implementation Lead, Unlocking Technology\n- June 2023–July 2024: Chairman and Co-Founder, Human Compatible\n- December 2022–January 2024: Founder, Refuge AI\n- June–December 2025: Technical Analyst, Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing\n- January 2022–December 2023: Honorary Associate in Entrepreneurship, University of Sydney\n- May 2019–January 2022: Associate Lecturer in Entrepreneurship, University of Sydney\n\nThese selected roles, titles and month-level dates come from Alex’s supplied [LinkedIn profile](https://www.linkedin.com/in/alex1carpenter).
