Alex Carpenter works across AI implementation, education and research. Based in Mount Barker, South Australia, he leads Unlocking Technology, teaches at Adelaide University, and is undertaking doctoral research into how SME leaders respond to AI.
His AI work includes founding Refuge AI in December 2022 and co-founding Human Compatible in June 2023. Since June 2024, he has led Unlocking Technology, combining technical implementation with helping organisations develop the capability to use and improve their systems.
His earlier experience spans entrepreneurship education, course design and university venture development. He also completed a technical analyst engagement with the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing in 2025.
His interests connect practical business adoption with broader questions about education, work, ownership and human dignity. This site brings together his longer-form writing and selected public contributions, with dates and links so readers can see both the argument and its context.
A personal perspective
I’m a devout Catholic, a husband and a father of three young children. My faith is at the core of my identity, and I pay close attention to the Vatican’s teaching on AI. That perspective shapes the questions I ask about technology and the future.
Practice
At Unlocking Technology, Alex combines technical implementation with helping people develop the capability to use and improve their systems. The practice is developing an approach to building software with teams and transferring operating knowledge and ownership to them.
